The skin is an essential barrier to maintain the homeostasis and resists external stimuli and pathogen. It is the most vulnerable organ in the events of burns and injuries as well. Large skin defect usually causes various serious complications, even directly endangers the patient′s life. It is impossible for large skin defect area to restore original structure and function due to limited skin resources. The skin replacement model focuses on the research and development of repairing and replacing of skin defects, utilizing natural or artificial skin-like tissue. This strategy has experienced the transition from traditional dressing to tissue engineering skin. This review summarizes the research status and prospects of the skin replacement model.
