Epidemiological characteristics of adult burn injuries in emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Beijing

Abstract:

Objective

To understand the epidemiological characteristics of adult burns and scalds in emergency department of the Fourth Medical Center, PLA General Hospital, so as to provide a valuable reference for burn prevention and self-aid education in Beijing.

Methods

Data of 5 374 adult patients with burns and scalds in Department of Burn and Plastic Surgery, Fourth Medical Center, PLA General Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were collected from medical records, including gender, cause of injury, time of injury, burn severity and the affected body part. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel 2019 and SPSS 22.0 software.

Results

Scald injuries caused by hot liquids were the most prevalent, accounting for 73.45% of all cases. Other causes of injury included flame burns (15.17%), chemical burns (4.37%), electrical burns (3.11%), low-temperature scalds (2.44%) and others(1.47%). Among the patients, number of male were 2 692 and number of female were 2 682, with a nearly equal gender distribution(1.004∶1). In patients with above moderate burns, the proportion of males was significantly higher than that of females (2.839∶1). The burns and scalds often occurred in the upper limbs, accounting for 44.08% of all parts of the body.

Conclusion

The epidemological characteristics of adult patients with burns and scalds in Beijing is different with that of other regions, which is probably due to the working conditions and producing activities. The prevention and self-aid are still the most important of all.
